About this clip, 2 of 4. Armenian Dances, part 1: Alfred Reed. This was my first chance to get up in front of a wind ensemble and really dive into a complete, complex piece of music. In march of this year me and a few other student conductors were allotted two rehearsals of roughly 30 minutes each to conduct our piece. The video shown is from the 2nd rehearsal. The first rehearsal I ran the entire piece from top to bottom, then rehearsed only the 5/8 section. In this video I rehearsed the 5/8 more, and at the request of the ensemble (the boss, actually) ran the piece once more from the top. Many thanks to Bruce Mcdonald for giving me this wonderful opportunity, from which I grew a lot. Looking back on the video, there are many moments for creating music that I didnt see, and shouldve taken advantage of. Also many things I shouldve rehearsed and fixed. Of course, its easy to hear them on the video, but not so easy to pick out when you have that white wash of sound when youre in the moment. As per baton technique, I tend to move my upper body too much and need to learn to keep the ictus in the baton. Instrumentation. We had skeleton instrumentation compared to what the score asks for; we had 3 flutes, one of which was paying the 1st oboe part, no oboe, 1 french horn, 1 or 2 clarinets, 1 saxophone (alto).
